The VELIS Electro, manufactured by Pipistrel in its factory in Slovenia, is the first EASA Type certified light aircraft in the world driven entirely by electric propulsion.

The Pipistrel family of aircraft has the highest safety record, due to a solid carbon fibre fuselage and a Kevlar protected cockpit.

VELIS Electro represents a totally new approach to aviation of the future.
The VELIS Electro has a range of approximately one hour of flight with a 20 minutes reserve. We are building a charging infrastructure across the UK approximately every forty nautical miles so you can land at your chosen airfield, recharge the aircraft's battery to full over an hour, which is an ideal time for a cup of tea and introduction to an airfield, and then you're ready to take off again!

1. What is the Velis Electro Aircraft?

The Pipistrel Velis Electro is the world's first fully electric aeroplane ever to receive type certification. The two-seater, intended primarily for pilot training, is a game-changing aircraft in terms of technological innovations and cost-efficiency. Its EASA certification paves the way for the future of environmentally sustainable, emission-free aviation.

Conceived as a fundamental part of the 'Velis Training System', the Velis Electro is designed to be simple to operate and maintain, without compromising safety.

2. Which Electric Motor is installed in the Velis ?

The motor is the Pipistrel's type certified electric engine, the 57.6kW liquid cooled electric engine provides power to the aircraft. This motor is developed and built in Slovenia in co-operation with EMRAX and EMSISO.

The Velis Electro delivers power instantly and without hesitation – a simplified user interface in a cockpit that maintains the same look-and-feel of its conventionally powered siblings. The revolutionary powertrain is entirely liquid-cooled, including the batteries, and demonstrated the ability to withstand faults, battery thermal runaway events, and crash loads as part of the certification process.

3. What is the Maintenance for the Velis?

The reduced number of moving parts in the electric motor dramatically decreases maintenance costs and the risk of malfunctions is further minimized thanks to its built-in continuous health- monitoring system.

The fully composite and monocoque type structure of the aircraft eliminates corrosion and reduces routine maintenance and inspection costs.

4. What about reliability and operating costs ?

The paucity of moving parts and lack of vibrations in the airframe increase reliability. This enhanced reliability allows the Velis Electro to have more than double the lifespan of powertrain elements in comparison to the previous generation of electric aeroplanes.

The overall result of all these breakthrough innovations is a drastic reduction in the operating costs, significantly contributing to the affordability of pilot training.

5. How quiet and clean is it?

Featuring noise levels of only 60 dBa, Velis Electro is considerably quieter than other aeroplanes and produces no combustion gases at all. Its revolutionary powertrain is entirely liquid-cooled, including the batteries, and demonstrated the ability to withstand faults, battery thermal runaway events, and crash loads as part of the certification process. Velis Electro can operate in cold, hot and rain.

6. How safe is it?

As part of the EASA Type Certification, Pipistrel demonstrated that Velis Electro achieves the highest levels of safety, even surpassing those required for conventionally powered aircraft. Velis Electro is a full-electric derivative of the proven Virus SW 121, which is already type certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (TC No EASA.A.573).

It is equipped with a Pipistrel type certified electric engine E-811-268MVLC (TC No. EASA.E.234), developed with partners EMRAX and EMSISO, and Pipistrel's three-bladed composite fixed pitch propeller P-812-164-F3A.

The 57.6kW (77 hp) liquid cooled electric engine provides power to the aircraft.

7. Which Batteries are used in the Velis ?

The power is delivered by 345 Volts D.C. electric system built around a liquid-cooled, in-house developed, high performance battery system, which includes two Pipistrel PB345V124E-L batteries connected in parallel, installed in a redundant 2-unit arrangement, total nominal capacity 24.8kWh. The battery packs are crashworthy and have thermal runway inhibiting protections. They are also HIRF/EMI tolerant. (High Intensity Radio Frequency / Electro Magnetic Interference).

One battery pack is located in the nose of the aeroplane and the second behind the cabin. This ensures redundancy of the power source: in case of battery failure, the malfunctioning battery would get automatically disconnected from the system. A single battery is capable of standalone operation and has enough power capability to support climbing and continuation of flight.

8. How long does it take to charge the batteries?

The charger provided with each aircraft is a portable charger ranging from 3 kW to 20 kW charging power. The portable charger weighs about 45 kg. Add This plugs into a wall connecting to a five pin three phase AC supply. The output cable is plugged into the aircraft on the nose cowling into a charge input socket. Charge time will vary upon battery charge status and electrical power availability from the network. The charger is a world-wide charger and a portable unit which can be connected to any 110V and 240V, 50 Hz or 60 Hz electrical grid.

9. What is the flight endurance and characteristics of the Velis?

The Velis Electro is designed for circuit training with a flight endurance of 50 minutes with a VFR reserve. If you plan to fly to another airfield, that airfield must have a charger available to recharge after you land.

Our mission
Our Mission is to promote and grow sustainable aviation in the UK through the introduction of the Velis Electro and the development of a charging infrastructure to support the electric flight.

At the development stage, our project will be re-investing all profit into the promotion and development of eco-friendly, zero emission, sustainable flying of electric aircraft in the British skies and beyond.
On Demand Aviation is rapidly becoming a new reality just as other on-demand consumer services recently emerged – from taxis and food delivery to video and entertainment.

In the UK, aviation is set to be the biggest source of CO2 emissions by 2050; recent surveys by UBS bank found people are beginning to cut air travel over concerns for the environment.

We put out a call to the nation to take a challenge and join the movement! Airfields across the UK are responding rapidly to join our network of charging facilities, allowing the aviation environmental revolution to become a reality!

Our small model to a large network approach also has rural tourism development in mind, yet taking it to a completely new and different level of experience and innovation.

Our First Objective is to create the first of its kind Operating Model for the world's first fully electric air-service born in the UK.

Observed and tested in real-life conditions, our model will give us the opportunity to track and record data, describe the experience, and summarise what is involved into flying electric aircraft in the conventional aviation environment.

Our Operating Model of Air and Ground Procedures for Electric Aircraft, in place and fully documented, will then be presented in a series of comprehensive guides to be published and made available free of charge to the sites across the country looking to establish electric air vehicle operations in the near future, as well as for Government and other bodies involved across the UK.

Our team
Highly experienced, with hundreds of hours on Pipistrel aircraft, our core pilot team have completed comprehensive flight training on flying fully electric aircraft.

The majority of our pilots are also working as flying instructors which creates a different experience and hence an additional level of safety of flight.

The Hub of Operations for NEBOair
Wilderley is a unique recreational farm resort in the heart of the Waveney Valley, East Anglia. It is also a showcase for the promotion of green energy and sustainable living. Shipmeadow Airfield is the Hub of operations for NEBOair. It currently offers a unique combination of activities to include flight experiences, animal interaction and a range of hand-crafted, solar-powered accommodation choices.

Set on a 40-acre hobby farm, you can stay with us in a range of hand-crafted, solar-powered accommodation, interact with a broad variety of over 200 free-range animals, relax and reset body and mind in our bespoke yoga facility and take a unique flight in a light aircraft (coming soon: in the world's first electric aircraft!).

Unique Escapes from an Arts & Crafts Treehouse with a Narnian-inspired garden, a ranch-style Goat Camp for families to a Victorian railway carriage and a floating boat overlooking the valley; each space has been curated to inspire and charm - with decor objects sourced during the owners' flying adventures. Each boutique accommodation has its own private space with no shared facilities. Collect your own eggs, pick herbs and veg from our Wilderley garden, and browse our little farm shop for Wilderley-related gifts to take back home!

The centre already has a proven track record having benefited the local community economically and socially as well as enabling interaction between tourists and locals for a more enriching tourism experience.

In 2018 we received a match finance grant from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, LEADER and the local Waveney Valley Leader Group for development of the Yoga and Wellness Centre on site. The Centre is completed and fully operational for the use of visiting guests and pilots (www.wilderley.com).

Pilots are welcome to fly in and charge, but we can also offer optional overnight stay.

Owned and operated by two experienced business people, themselves active pilots, the site offers bespoke accommodation as well as a spacious office and catering facilities.
The VELIS Electro trialled by the RAF
We are delighted at the end 2021, Affinity Flight Training Services and the RAF started using two VELIS Electro in their testing the feasibility of using electric aircraft for training functions as part of early steps towards a Net Zero Air Force by their 2040 target.

A small team of Test Pilots from the Air and Space Warfare Centre have flown the Pipistrel Velis Electro aircraft at two locations. Phase one training for the pilots started at Damyns Hall in 2021 with our Director of Flight Operations, Deepak Mahajan and Flight Instructor Claire Bartlett. Phase two commenced at RAF College Cranwell in March 2022.
Captain Steve Boulton RN said 'As the MoD sponsor for this event I have been extremely pleased with all that I have witnessed. Everyone concerned with this project, from Test Pilots to engineering, logistics and airfield operating staff, are acutely aware of the significance of the journey we are on.

The VELIS Electro is undoubtedly a groundbreaking civil aircraft, which signposts the potential for meaningful changes in future light aircraft operations. I know that our test pilots and support staff have enjoyed the process of getting to grips with something hitherto beyond their reach.

For myself, this was the first opportunity to see the aircraft up close and I was struck by its technical simplicity. I am grateful for this opportunity to view the Pipistrel VELIS Electro and am looking forward to watching the zero emissions concept unfold, as part of our burgeoning work on the sustainable aviation technologies.
The Movement
The entire aviation community is incredibly excited about this new and rapidly developing project. We are receiving daily correspondence requesting information about specs of the aircraft and charging stations.

Airfields across the UK and Europe are sending letters of intent wishing to join the project and enhance our network.

Celeste Goschen
Director of Creative Marketing and Promotions (based at Shipmeadow)

Celeste is a serial entrepreneur, an aviation journalist and accomplished pilot having held a pilot's license since 2006, and has been a close associate of the Royal Air Squadron. Co-founder of Wilderley which are the headquarters of NEBOair, Wilderley is a showcase for the promotion of green energy and sustainable living. Set on a 40-acre hobby farm, you can stay in a range of hand-crafted, solar-powered accommodation, interact with a broad variety of over 200 free-range animals, relax and reset body and mind. Celeste is a Sustainability Influencer.

Leveraging her expertise, Celeste is responsible for designing and managing the NEBOair overall customer experience, as well as social media strategy for the project.

Sergey Grachev
Chief Executive Officer (based at Shipmeadow)

Sergey is an International lawyer and serial entrepreneur with a passion for Aviation and Sustainability. Sergey is a certified pilot, and has held an EASA PPL (A) license since 2013, this has supported the drive towards thriving to become the first CEO to be able to deliver the World's ONLY certified Electric Aircraft to UK flying schools and likeminded pilots. He is responsible for business strategy for NEBOair as well as legal support and day to day running.

Sergey is co-founder of Wilderley, the hub of NEBOair, an eco-farm resort specializing in rewilding and community driven activities which include animal therapy and resorting back to nature.

Deepak Mahajan
Director of Flight Operations and Technical Consultant (based in London)

Deepak is a UK CAA Certified Flight Instructor and Ground Examiner, with more than 15,000 flight hours. He completed a flight course to fly fully electric aircraft in 2017, qualified as a Rotax Engine Technician in 2016, and completed a Basic Engineering Course through open University from 2004 through 2006. He has had a PPL in the UK since 1989, EASA and French PPL's. He founded MSA Ltd. In 1998 to offer flight-training, aircraft sales, parts and avionics to the UK market and he continues to run the day-to-day operations of that business, as well as acting as flight instructor at his own flight school at Damyns Hall Airfield in East London. Deepak is also a co-founder and director of several UK based light aviation businesses, including iFly Electric UK Ltd. operating from Damyns Hall Airfield.

Deepak led a team of engineers and other specialists to complete the UK CAA certification of several types of aircraft for the UK market. As Head of Flight Operations, he oversees flight and safety operations, including training and compliance with our AOC.

Kerry Wilmot
Director of Project and Infrastructure Management

Having been part of NEBOair since its inception, Kerry has now taken on the challenging role of building the infrastructure for charging stations across the UK to offer flight schools, flying clubs, individuals and syndicates the opportunity to introduce this fully-electric option into light aircraft aviation and pilot training, alongside Rental and Sales Co-ordinator for Green Airside.

A lifelong lover of vintage military aircraft, as well as watching colleagues and friends fly conventional aircraft, Kerry understands and appreciates change is not always easy. However, with the government directive to reach Net Zero, driven by growing public concerns regarding climate change and the environment, we all have to embrace a shift towards a more sustainable future in aviation and hopes others may consider joining us on the 'path to cleaner skies'.

Claire Bartlett
Qualified VELIS Electro Flight Instructor (based at Damyns Hall)

Claire is the First female in the UK to gain her qualification to instruct on Electric Aircraft.

She has held her PPL for 26 years, gaining qualification in 2021 as a flight instructor. Claire feels she is fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to be a part of NeboAir's vision and is looking forward to the exciting developments in green aviation.

Chris Kirk
Flight Instructor (based at Wickenby)

Chris gained his EASA PPL (A), Flight Instructor rating and tail wheel endorsement. He also holds a ROCC (Radio Operators Certificate of Competence) this allow him to operate any ground station at an airfield to provide airfield information. Chris has over a thousand hours flying different types of aircraft. He holds a PfCO (Permission for Commercial Operation) enabling him to fly small unmanned aircraft for commercial gain. Chris is currently carrying out his differences training to enable him to train on the Velis Electro.

Mike Powell
North of England liaison partner

Mike has held a private pilot licence for 30 years. He is passionate about flying which influenced his decision to become an instructor. He has over 6000 hours flying time in the UK and Europe. During his career he has developed many contacts within aviation and beyond.

Adam Hammett
Infrastructure Support & STEM Ambassador

An experienced Project Manager and Professionally Qualified Engineer with over 24 years of exemplary service in the British Army. He has delivered a wide range of construction and infrastructure engineering projects in challenging environments in the UK and overseas. Adam joined the NEBOair team as support for our groundworks and infrastructure installations. He is a STEM ambassador and as such is keen to promote new and emerging 'green' technologies to the younger generation.

Carol Brightwell
Electric Licensed Aircraft Engineer and Owner/Director of Arion Aviation Ltd

Carol has many years' experience as a licenced aircraft engineer and has recently become the First woman to be a certified engineer for electric aircraft. We are delighted that Carol joins the NEBOair team with her expertise in aircraft engineering.

Louise Ward
Air and Ground Operations Support (based at Shipmeadow)

Louise has 20 years' experience with the Royal Air Force where Louise was involved in logistics, supply and air movements. Louise is a fully qualified EASA PPL (H) helicopter pilot and a massive aviation enlightenment enthusiast.
